Using white noise

When we set up for a newborn session as well as ensuring the studio is warm and cosy we also put on white noise. This is one of the first things many parents ask us about.

What is White Noise?
White noise is a type of noise that is produced by combining sounds of all different frequencies together.

Why do babies like White Noise?
Newborn babies have just spent their entire life in the womb, the womb is very loud so the world they are born into is uncomfortably quiet. White noise helps to get baby to sleep and stay alsleep, it also helps to comfort and calm baby.

What White Noise works best?
Have you ever shushed your baby well that is a form of white noise, when you are shushing you need to shush loudly enough so the calming noise can penetrate over the baby’s cry.
In the studio we use a mixture of different white noise but our usual mix is heartbeat and shushing. There are many to choose from and your sure to find the perfect one for your baby, weather it’s rain, Hoover, clock, fan or something else.

Where can I get White Noise?
There are many free and paid apps advailble. The one we use in the studio is available on the App Store

Will my baby be addicted to White Noise?
Your baby should probably ween off white noise quite easily as the reach the age of one.

You can also buy teddys and night lights with white noise built in like the ones mentioned in the Amazon links above. These are perfect for night times and for trips out in the pram.
