What to wear for your autumn family session

Autumn is such a beautiful season with gorgeous colours and flattering lightning, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and plan a fun relaxed family photography session.

Once you have your session booked it’s important to start planning and organising what you should wear on the day. If you are struggling to find a place to start then Pinterest boards are a great place to look and provide you with some inspiration. Check out our what to wear board on Pinterest.

Coordinate but don’t match
When styling a photo session, start with a basic colour palette and go from there.
It tends to be easier to find the “center stage” pieces in girl’s and women’s clothing, so start with the females and then pull colours from their outfits to create a look for the boys and dad.

Accessorise
Scarves, hats, flowers in the hair for girls, jewellery, jumpers and jackets will help pull the look together. Be careful to choose a few accessories that complement the look without being distracting.

Layers and textures
Layers and textures are great at creating interest in photos. Use multiple textures and layers, this is especially important when working with a color palette a bit on the neutral or softer side (with a subtle color pop here or there).

Shoes matter
The choice of shoes can make or break an outfit. Don’t leave these till last, lay clothes out on and make sure shoes compliment your outfits.

Props
Props should blend with the the overall feel of the session, keep them simple and meaningful. A handful of flowers, a pile of leaves, a basket of golden apples, the absolute best type of prop is something that is meaningful to your family. Don’t let the prop be an odd distraction – make sure it “makes sense” being in the photo and blends well with the whole feel you had in mind for the shoot.

How will the images be displayed?
Think about the primary reason you are doing the session and dress accordingly. For instance, if it’s for Christmas cards you might want to dress in wintry, seasonal clothing. For a canvas in the living room, think about coordinating with the colors and feel of your decor.

Get children involved
Make sure that the children can move freely in their outfits and that they aren’t going to be pulling at their new clothes. You want them happy and comfortable, not grouchy and miserable during the shoot! Let them have some input in what they wear. Kids who help dress themselves will not only be much happier during the session but you’ll let their own beautiful personalities shine through in the images.

Talk to your children before the session and answer any questions they may have about the session. Tell them your photographers name and allow the chance for them to play and explore.

Hopefully this blog has helped but if you need any further advice id be happy to look over your clothing choices before your session with us!
